EARTH DAY TO FEATURE TIPS ON SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

"The City of Santa Clarita will host Earth Arbor Day on Saturday, April 17 with a host of activities, musical acts and vendors. Also featured at the 2010 event will be representatives from Alta Planning, who helped implement the local Safe Routes to School Program that strives to teach local kids how to arrive safely at school.

SCHOOLS REWARD BIKING, WALKING

"Students from Santa Clarita Valley elementary schools who walked and rode their bicycles to campus Wednesday were greeted with stickers and raffle tickets for a new bike. About 136 Old Orchard Elementary students participated in a day celebrating Bike and Walk to School Month, a city-sponsored program that encouraged students and parents to find healthy alternatives to driving, school officials said."

SANTA CLARITA GEARS UP TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL BIKE AND WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH

"This month, the City of Santa Clarita will join more than 42 countries worldwide in celebrating International Bike and Walk to School Month. The event, designed to encourage parents and kids to forego buses and cars in favor of biking or walking to school, will be celebrated at four local elementary schools in conjunction with the City’s Safe Routes to School Program."

CITY RECEIVES FULL FUNDING FOR SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM

"The goal of this project is to design and construct physical improvements in and around the schools in order to reduce the speed of vehicles and increase the visibility of school crossings. The improvements include bulb-outs, speed feedback signs, enhanced crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals, and upgraded school area signage."

CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AWARDED $435,000 FOR SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAM

"The money awarded this year will go towards installing improvements in the areas surrounding Canyon Springs, Meadows and Emblem elementary schools. These improvements are scheduled to be installed in the Summer of 2009. The three schools chosen for last year’s grant, Santa Clarita, Newhall and Cedar Creek elementary, will have their improvements installed in the Summer of 2008."
