Walk and Bike to School Day in Santa Clarita - An Awesome Success!
On October 27, 2010, North Park, Old Orchard, and Rio Vista Elementary Schools participated in International Walk and Bike to School Day! At the three schools, more than 800 students walked, biked, or rolled! All students were greeted by a traffic safety character and received a sticker when they arrived at school. Students who walked or biked (or scooted or skated) were entered into a raffle to win a $250 gift certificate towards a free bicycle at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Plus, the classroom in each grade at each school with the biggest percentage of students walking and bicycling won $50 towards a class party. Way to go, everyone!
2010 City of Santa Clarita Earth Day Festival
The Santa Clarita Safe Routes to School program hosted a popular booth at the City of Santa Clarita Earth Arbor Day Celebration on April 17, 2010 at Newhall Park. Our large area in the Children's Zone featured a Safe Moves City, coloring activities, a walking and bicycling trivia quiz, an Earth Day pledge to walking and bicycling, and free prizes! More than 100 children participated by walking or bicycling through the Safe Moves City to learn traffic safety or by taking part in one of our other fun activities. Parents learned about the Safe Routes to School program at Santa Clarita schools.
One young girl drew a neighborhood park as her favorite place to bike.
