Walking Audits

In a walking audit, parents, students, teachers, and school administrators evaluate traffic safety issues near schools by walking the streets and discussing observations. Walking audits consider:

  • traffic safety concerns (e.g. speeding cars)
  • walking concerns (e.g. no crosswalk where children need to cross)
  • bicycling issues (e.g. presence/absence of bike racks at schools)
  • ideas and potential solutions

After a walking audit, the issues and potential solutions are summarized and draft plans are developed. These draft plans are used to apply for grant funding to construct projects.

The Safe Routes to School team, along with district and school staff, have conducted walking audits at all 26 elementary and middle schools in Santa Clarita.
