Do you want to encourage walking to school in a safe, fun setting?
Do you already walk to school with your children or wish that you could?
Do you and your kids want to be part of the Walking School Bus?
With the help of parents & community partners we can help children walk to school safely – for fun, health, the environment, and the community!
What is a Walking School Bus?
A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. It can be as informal as a few parents taking turns to walk their children to school, but often it is a well-organized, parent-led effort. It’s really just that simple – and we want you to be a part of the first Walking School Buses in Santa Clarita!

Walking School Bus Training Workshops
During the 2009-2010 school year, the Santa Clarita Safe Routes to School Program hosted training workshops on starting a Walking School Bus in neighborhoods around schools. These trainings have been designed mostly for parents, but also for teachers or staff who want to get involved. Interested adults learned all the tips and tricks needed to organize or be part of a Walking School Bus.
Walking School Bus Training Workshops were held at Rio Vista, North Park, and Old Orchard Elementary Schools. We had 20 parents and one principal take part in the fun, interactive workshops. We look forward to hearing about the Walking School Buses at these schools!
Walking School Bus at Old Orchard Elementary School
Old Orchard Elementary School held their first Walking School Bus on April 29, 201 0. More than 100 students participated in this great event, with two buses walking to school, one from the west and one from the north. Children and parents were all smiles. Stud ents received a button, sticker, or lanyard for participating, and they wore them with pride as they walked to school. Old Orchard Principal, Sandra Reveles, made an announcement over the PA congratulating all of the children who participated in the event.
